He went to Groton School where he got his first appearance on stage in the play Shakespeare ‘Henry V’. Gwynne also served in the U.S Navy during the time of World War 2 as a radioman. After coming from the Navy, he joined Harvard University where he studied English. During his graduation from Harvard, he learned so much about acting and he was also a cartoonist for the Harvard lampoon and acted in many theatrical shows which were happening in their college at that time.
There were many ups and downs during his career like after completing his graduation in 1951, he joined Brattle Theatre Repertory Company but to support himself he also worked as a Copywriter. In 1952, he resigned from his copywriting job and he got his first Broadway role in a comedy Mrs. McThing.
