His father Prakash Rao Janumala was an operator in the Hindustan Lever Ltd (HLL) plant and his mother’s name was Karunamma Janumala.
Lever was born in a Telugu Christian family and was the eldest amongst his siblings which consisted of three sisters and two brothers, including Jimmy Moses, who is also a stand-up comedian. Lever practices Christianity as his religion.
Johnny Lever married Sujatha Johnrao Janumala in the year 1984. They together have two children, a daughter named Jamie, also a stand-up comedian, and a son Jesse, actor and musician.

Lever did his early schooling from Andhra Education Society English high school but couldn’t continue after seventh grade because of his family’s financial problems. He decided to drop out of school and take up some odd jobs, so he started selling pens on the streets of Mumbai by imitating Bollywood stars. He also learned the comedy acting style during his early years at Yakutpura, Hyderabad.
Career
He started working along with his father in Hindustan Lever factory where he would also entertain his colleagues by imitating different actors. He also performed at the functions organized by Hindustan lever.
Later on, he performed in Musical shows organized by Tabassum Hit Parade and the acclaimed Kalyanji- Anandji (a music director duo).
Lever did many shows and world tours with them, but his first big tour was with Amitabh Bachchan in 1982. It was during one of these shows that lever was discovered by the veteran actor Sunil Dutt and was offered a role in Dutt’s film ‘Dard ka Rishta’.
Since then he acted in more than 300 films like ‘Kishan Kanhaiya’, ‘Kasam’, ‘Tejab’ but he got recognition after playing ‘Babulal’ in the movie ‘Baazigaar’, directed by Abbas-Mustan. His other iconic characters were ‘Chotta Chattri’, ‘Aslam Bhai’, etc.
He was last seen in the film ‘Housefull 4’ in the year 2019 and would be seen again in ‘Coolie No.1’ in 2020 which is the remake of the 1995 comedy-drama film ‘Coolie No.1’ directed by David Dhawan.
Apart from acting in Bollywood films Lever also acted in a Tulu movie, ‘Rang’, and also some Tamil and Telugu feature films. He also worked in the Gujarati film, ‘Pappa Tamne Nahi Samjaay’.
He also had a television career as well he appeared in an episode of ‘Zabaan Sambhalke’ (sitcom) as Johnny Utolandand. He also had his own TV show, ‘Johny Aala Re’. he also appeared as a judge on the stand-up comedy reality show, Comedy Circus in 2007.

Lever was nominated thirteen times for ‘Filmfare Awards for Best Performance in a Comic Role’ out of which he won two in the year 1997 and 1998 for Deewana Mastana and Dulhe Raja respectively.
He also won the ‘Star Screen Award for Best Comedian’ in 1997 for his film, ‘Raja Hindustani’.
He was awarded the ‘Zee Cine Award for Best Actor in a comic role’ for ‘Love Ke Liye Kuchh Bhi Karega’ in 2002.
He is the president of MAAM (Mimicry Artist Association Mumbai), and has also done thousands of live shows all over the world.
Controversies
Although leading a very simple life, yet Lever had his own share of controversies some of which are as follows:
- On 8 December 1998, he was sentenced to seven days of imprisonment for disrespecting the National Anthem and Constitution of India at the birthday party of Anis Ibrahim’s son in Dubai.
- In 2013, he was alleged of propagating Christianity and proselytizing Hindus, by Bajrang Dal and Vishva Hindu Parishad who threatened to organize ‘Hawan’ in Johnny’s house.

Johnny smokes and drinks alcohol but he quits in 2002.

It was during performing mimicry in an event at HLL, his colleagues got so impressed and gave him the name Johnny Lever.

His son was diagnosed with throat cancer and he felt helpless about it and it was at this time he turned to God for help.
He used to spend all his time praying for his son. Ten days later, when he has diagnosed again everybody including the doctors were surprised because cancer had vanished.

The biggest regret of his life is not being able to reach out to his father when he had a paralytic attack and had to get his leg amputated.
